He is actually so sweet, I've taken him twice, those who rate him low honestly it might just be not their learning style. He is very organized and if you show up to class you will get SO much info on what tests or quizzes are on. It's somewhat annoying that he doesn't use slides and writes everything on the whiteboard by hand, but he is ultra passionate about what he teaches and loves to answer questions if you're confused. One of the best professors I've ever had. Yes, he is sometimes a little disorganized, but he cares so deeply about the concepts and his students. Was really willing to work with me when I was in a tough spot. Hoffman is horrible at communication and organization. He often apologizes for making mistakes or not grading quizzes, but never does anything to make up for that. His philosophy seems to be that if you mess up, its your fault, never his. Can def see how he's disliked. Very hit or miss in terms of lectures. Some are good, others are very disorganized. He'll spend most of the class on an example, make a couple mistakes and then decide to not ever go over that topic again. His lectures could use some more organization; his quizzes can be poorly written; sometimes he takes a while to reply to emails; but he's very approachable and always willing to set up meetings if you can't make his office hours. His classes are pretty useless they have zero structure to them whatsoever. Instead, answers questions regarding the homework problems. If there aren't questions, he will wait until there are questions and he will often make mistakes when doing examples. Do not take this professor. You will not do well and he is completely inaccessible outside of the classroom. You spend hours and hours studying and his lectures are beyond useless. Good professor. Weekly quizzes are based on homework, so doing the homework and showing up to class sets you up for an A.
