So. Much. Reading. Genuinely at least 200 pages a week, sometimes more. On weeks without books assigned, the assigned reading was just a large amount of randomly disorganized PDFs posted on Canvas. You don't know anything about what your grade is until the very end of the semester, and even then, there is really no evidence behind the grade.ENGL2455 2025-12-17 00:40:13 +0000 UTC
Super knowledgable on the subject matter, grows on you, but you need to try and want to do well to actually do well. Her classes are not a walk in the park, but you will learn a lot.ENGL4670 2024-03-12 20:21:14 +0000 UTC
Very intelligent and knowledgeable, but sometimes rather pretentious. Her feedback on essays is hard to understand, and her grading is a little unreasonable. She had us arrange the desks in a semi-circle and called it a discussion class, but it was too large to be a true discussion and the classes were dominated by her lectures.ENGL1503 2012-12-17 17:33:26 +0000 UTC
9 books for the semester. 200+ pages of reading on the weeks we didn't have a book due. Very discussion heavy. This professor is not tech-savvy. She also is immunocompromised so making up in-class writings is tough. The windows stay open semester-long (it gets cold). Will have in-class hand written essays because she is worried about AI.ENGL2455 2025-12-06 22:38:30 +0000 UTC
Professor Kaplan is the best English instructor I have ever had. Her class is not easy, and there is a good deal of reading. You are expected not to have any unexcused/unexplained absences, to be on time and to show up to class ready to learn. She explains concepts very clearly, is visibly passionate about her work, and is a wonderful instructor.ENGL4670 2014-01-07 19:37:32 +0000 UTC
Prof. Kaplan is an extremely intelligent woman and is clearly very enthusiastic about the material she presents in her American Lit class. She tells you how difficult it can be to teach "survey" classes because of the scope of works covered, but she does a great job and you get a great background on more modern literary movements and aesthetics.ENGL1503 2012-11-13 22:52:07 +0000 UTC
So much reading for American Women's Writers. It is ridiculous. As much as I like some of the content, it is too much, the readings are obligatory for use in class discussion. She has said it is mandatory even if we will not be talking about it in the class period... She is super well-versed, but I would never take this class again.ENGL2455 2025-10-09 17:03:06 +0000 UTC
