Don't get me wrong: RL is a hard class, and is very theory heavy, which leads to people struggling. Berkeley lectures much more effective than going to class, he just points and reads the slides. Said the best review for the exam was the HWs, but didn't grade HW until exam week. Study guides were just HW problems + irrelevant theory problems. Project guidelines poorly explained, feedback vague. Amato is a great professor and the fact that the class is hard is not a him thing so much as that rl is a tough subject. I thought it was a great class, but if you blew off lecture and the readings, would probably be next to impossible to do well. He's really hard to follow and it's just hard to get into the lectures, especially if you're behind at any point. The Berkeley CS188 lectures are the exact same and teach so much better. Prof. Amato is very knowledgeable, and clear. His lectures can be followed by anyone and he promotes an interactive class environment, which I felt was very welcoming. Really just truly awful in CS 4100. By far the worst course I've taken at Northeastern, fundamentally random grading, dismissive and apathetic professor. Save yourself the 8 grand and watch a youtube video on AB Pruning. Chris, if you don't want to teach, then don't. He doesn't care about his students' time or wellbeing. Constantly changed the schedule by constantly uploading homework late, combining assignments into larger assignments, and not defining project criteria clearly. Professor Amato is clearly a research oriented professor who just really doesn't want to teach. He phones in every element of his class, from slides pulled directly from curriculums of other universities, to assigning coursework from other professors without really reading it. This professor has no idea what he's doing and isn't prepared for this class. His course material was basic and didn't relate to the homework. He gave programming assignments over halfway through the semester and didn't teach us how to code. Sets you up for failure by not teaching you how he wants you to do things and gives conflicting information about the content.
