Ferd is a great teacher and an expert at his field. However, progress reports has been hell as of fall 2025. Piazza is kind of a mess as well, and a hit or miss whether the teachers will respond to the questions or not. It is better to access his help during office hours or after class. Alright so 3100 is a miserable experience and should be avoided but Ferd himself is a great professor. The lectures can be dry but given how he was given AI slop to teach with I can't blame him too much. the assignments were released on Friday and the material is fully taught by Wednesday or even Thursday, which makes us rush the assignment to done by Friday evening. the exams were decent, but the level of difficulty is way harder than the practice exams. very messy and I'm guessing the people that did pass somehow used ChatGPT to succeedCS3650 2025-12-17 00:33:41 +0000 UTC
I am currently in his CS2800 class. It is absolutely terrible. I have taken 12 classes at Northeastern University so far. This is, by far, the worst. Great lectures and you can tell he loves CS. All of the policies regarding grading, assignments, participation is done through pawtograder, its same for all sections of 3100, so nothing he can control. Excellent lecturer, clearly an expert in topic and genuinely wants to teach you what he knows. Willing to take the time to go back and explain topics differently to make you understand. Ferd is a great guy and very knowledgeable. He tries to make the lectures interesting, but unfortunately the new CS3100 curriculum is fully AI slop. Given the circumstances, I would say he handles the course pretty well but it's difficult with poor material. He's a nice guy but I'm giving a terrible rating because he has not returned grades in months and completes ghosts his students online. It's totally fine to be behind on grading but it's not okay to drop all communication to your students. I get what other people meant by he's wholesome since he tries being uplifting and encouraging. Lectures are basically him coding on screen how to do problems in Racket. He posts copies of his notes to Canvas which is nice. He's one of the professors though that will ask questions and wait a while for a response.
