If you want to learn deep learning, look at some free edX/MIT classes; if you're taking this for PhD, I'd recommend taking other sessions other than his. The lectures are super dry, often skipping showing how to solve actual problems. He didn't did do well explaining the concepts. This course covers conventional machine learning materials. I have taken cs6140 under another professor, which actually covered similar topics compared to this course. But that one is more profound and interesting, I guess it's due to the teaching style. A must-take class if you want to claim that you understand why deep learning works. He comprehends and complements the difficult-to-self-learn textbooks very well so that the large topics fit within a semester. I learned a lot from Professor Zhang's lectures. Each presentation/class had a well-structured flow and the content was relevant and useful. He is also very well-versed in the topic which meant that additional comments were typically insightful. CS7140 is a challenging course, but you will learn a lot if you dive into it. Please take CS6140 machine learning before you pick this one, or you will feel lost for the entire semester. Took his course last year. He's probably good at his field but the course is poorly designed. Just read off the slides which just copy&paste from other universities' slides. He didn't organize them well and plan beforehand. Often changed the assignment's requirements at the last mins. Very little passion for teaching. He is the best lecturer if you want to learn machine learning. He teaches tough topics effectively using his own words that makes us much easier to learn the topics by reading texts.
