This professor was very straightforward with students and generally did a strong job explaining business calculus concepts. His teaching style was clear and focused on making sure students understood the material. He was a good lecturer, made an effort to make the class concise and understandable, focusing mostly on what was going to be on the tests and the final exam. Most of the qualms I had were with the department's design of the class, with only a few quiz grades determining one's grade and the final exam being very heavily weighted. I had him for Calc 2 where I hadn't done calc in a year so I was very rusty. Professor Marcotte is very friendly and a great person. However, I would not recommend him for Differential Equations. MATH 2341 has a departmental final and he simply did not cover large portions of the content that was on the final. My class average was a 68 compared to the department average of ~84. Professor Marcotte is good at making difficult concepts easy. He canceled class a few times during the semester, and he'd often show up 5-15 minutes late for class (it was an 8 am). This was my 2nd time taking a class from him, and I don't regret it. I took this during summer 1 because I failed calc the first time. He is AWESOME. so honest about exactly what will be on tests and is very good at explaining concepts and even though I took the whole class in 6 weeks, it didn't feel rushed or like I was falling behind. Jim's class is designed to prepare you well for the final. He gives weekly quizzes but will tell you what's on them ahead of time and will gladly help you if your struggling during the quiz. This Professor may be good at teaching calculus (according to the reviews), but he cannot teach 1365. He made it clear he was "forced" to teach this class and was unhelpful during office hours (which he only held once a week). Great class. There are 4 tests (the lowest gets dropped). HW and online quizzes were easy 100s. There was a group project that took about an hour of work every 2 weeks, which he graded leniently.
