Turns genuine curiosity into pure misery. Quizzes are 10-point landmines with zero partial credit mercy. Sleepless nights, weight gain, blood pressure through the roof, walked away with a B and a therapist recommendation. You'll learn MDPs by having your soul graded out of you. His teaching style is pretty unstructured/unclear. A lot of the class content is not related to what will be on a quiz/exam so it's hard to figure out what we're expected to know. Lectures are very unstructured and confusing. I go to class, pay attention, and take notes, but when I go to do the assignments, I'm not sure how to answer the questions. He seems like a nice guy, but his lectures are confusing. I think I know what's going on during class, but I have no clue for the HWs because a lot of concepts weren't mentioned/clearly defined. Took it over the summer and really enjoyed it! Professor is very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. Assignments are straightforward, Final Group Project is a lot of work, no exams, TAs & OH are very helpful. Prefers finishing content quickly over actually making sure students understand it. Doesn't review material. Lectures are conducted by "reasoning" about how to solve problems without distinguishing between different topics/models/approaches. Homework due 8pm, no regrade on final despite a 50 avg. midterm was 60 avg and no curves. Teaching is a bit too unstructured and test questions can be ambiguous. He is passionate though. Unreasonable homework amount and timeline. Strange sense of "fair", doesn't allow extra credit because that's "unfair" to students with a job that do not have the time (funny, isn't the whole idea of extra credit just sacrificing extra time to boost your grade?). I recommend starting assignments early. He was a passionate lecturer who definitely showed enthusiasm for the content. This class didn't have exams previously, but they are a new addition this semester. They were graded harshly, with little room for partial credit. Genuinely the best one of the best professors I've had. Prof Raj is so willing to make this course the best it can be, and it's clear he wants all his students to learn and pass.
