I took Professor Sherman for Pre-Calculus and Calculus I. If you're looking for a good math professor to take during summer semesters, he's your guy. His lectures are enjoyable even though they are fast. He encourages questions and he WILL make sure you know your stuff. He's a funny guy who really loves teaching math. Professor Sherman was the highlight of my experience at Northeastern in 1970. He completely changed my life. There were the Peace rallies in Washington DC. Although i was his top student in a class of 60, he wisely advised me to leave college and travel the world, which i did, to my great benefit, for the next 20 years. One of the worst professors in the department in terms of attempting to convey a lecture to the class. Goes off on tangents constantly and does not know when to stop talking. Absolutely awful. His lectures are incomprehensible and fast, and usually when I ask a question, I'm more confused after he answers it rather than less. He makes you feel stupid if you don't know an "obvious" answer. He loves teaching mathematics. Sometimes his lectures could be a bit unclear, but he is enthusiastic, and he demands a lot of his students. I learned Linear Algebra inside and out by taking this course, but I learned mostly from reading the book, not from Sherman. This professor expected graduate-level work from sophomore students and was derogatory and condescending in comments when grading papers. His classes were disorganized and his explanations were confusing at best. I know this guy is a genius, but he often talks about things off topic when he's teaching. It was just so confusing to be in class and have no idea what the heck is going on. Sherman is the best math teacher I have encountered at NU. He actually cares about his students and values feedback in his teaching styles. He likes to go off on tangents while he teaches, but its nice to have a teacher that does more than read from a textbook. EXTREMELY UNCLEAR. For a 100minute class, wasting 105minutes is just ridiculous. Grading was also unfair. He had a condecending type of attitude towards students, and also had "I'm too good for this place" type of attitude. Avoid him if you want to understand the material. Very helpful teacher... sometimes gets off topic but is able to get his point across most of the time, and when he isn't he is more than willing to stay after class to help out or meet with you at other times.
