During my academic career I have never met a professor who exhibits more favoritism than Dan Sunderland. He consistently selects 4 plus students from his alma mater, Dickenson University, and gives them preferential treatment over others in the class. The professor uses menti questions to gauge what the class knows anonymously. He discusses each option and explains why it may or may not apply to the question. Prof. Sunderland explains lecture concepts very well, but the homework assignments and tests are extremely difficult. Even when you ask him questions about homework problems, he gets confused trying to explain. Professor Sunderland is one of my favorite professors. He is extremely caring and makes it clear that he wants every student to succeed. He randomly calls on students, but I found this kept me engaged during class. His tests are online which was challenging for me because I prefer paper tests. It's very clear that Dan cares about each student and wants us to succeed. If you ask him to push back a deadline, he's usually very understanding about it. He does cold calls pretty often but he's always really nice and makes sure to explain when you are wrong. Absolutely love Dan, he's a great guy. His teaching, however, is not the best. Lectures are not very helpful and you should be prepared to be called on at any moment. You learn basically everything from the textbook and tests are pretty hard. I took this class during the pandemic, but he made the most out of this class through Zoom by using polling questions so there is some semblance of interaction when other classes makes me fall asleep due to 0 participation required.
