Professor Shorey's course was inspirational, hands-on, and fast-paced. She facilitated student debates we set the boundaries for and made the class feel comforting to attend. Sure, attendance is mandatory, but she collaborates with you to make 3 make-up assignments. This class persuaded me to keep going in Philosophy. This course is for incoming majors. Only 1 credit, but Prof Shorey gave us a good introduction to what we can expect from the program, and practice with the core skills. you miss a few classes your grade is cooked for the rest of the term - she ridiculously bases 60% of the grade on participation??? If you like tedious discussions about nothing for 3 hours a week then by all means this is your course. Professor Shorey does not care about her students as a professor should. She is not accomodating to students like me who had covid in her class. Her class was fully in-person and being quarantined I requested for her to put her classes on zoom as well to accommodate me and she did not. Literally worst professor I've experienced yet. INCREDIBLY passive-aggressive, and never responds to emails. If you talk to her in person, she isn't helpful and shames you. Talks about how "supportive she is" but then tanks every one of your grades with no explanation. Her formatting clearly conveys that she never passed grammar. Ignore reviews from entitled students who hate learning. Professor Shorey is well respected within the philosophy department and an amazing professor and person. She has expectations for her students, but only because she truly cares about them and wants them to succeed. She will teach you how to THINK! Literally does toooooo much all the time. So much work and very inconsiderate. Spent so much time and effort just to get a mid grade. DO Not take this class you will want to rip your hair off every time you enter the classroom,. If you have to take PHIL1165, take it with Professor Shorey in the summer! Although it is a long ~4 hour class and you meet twice a day, you'll learn better there than in the school year.
