Your grade is dependent on how you're doing compared to everyone else in the class in relation to a median grade which is usually like a 65. His voice is quiet so sit up front and you absolutely have to show up to class or else you'll miss important info. Meyer is brilliant & aware of the flaws of the education system, being forgiving when need be (sometimes accepts late papers). However, though he is extremely well versed in philosophy, doesn't interact with the class unless there is some random question. Lots of boring, tangential ranting, & monotonous. One of the worst profs i have ever had. You can't hear him if there is anything else in the building making noise, his lectures are monologues spitting back EXACTLY what was in the readings and nothing more, and his class bored me to tears. You have to do the readings. It makes class pass easier and you'll understand the points he gives in lecture (and you won't have to take as many notes!) The lectures can be dry. Try and put in effort you'll be fine. The one thing I wasn't expecting was his voice. It's hoarse, goes in and out. I tried to sit closer to the front. Meyer is seriously the most intelligent man I have ever met. Going to class is so important because he goes over all of the difficult points from the readings (which are difficult!) which will be what you are tested on. Lots of reading, writing, and thinking. Meyer is more focused on not cheating the hard-working, motivated students than coddling those who don't care or don't try. He is a great prof if you are in the first group like me. I love the guy. He is a good teacher, just don't take this class early in the morning. It's a little monotonous, so half of the class spend the time fighting with their sleep. However, he is very smart and the course is very interesting. It's not a very participative class.PHL101 2007-10-29 18:29:56 +0000 UTC
Serious students know that Prof Meyer is an excellent teacher whose only priority in class in teaching philosophy and being there for the students who want to learn. One of the smartest and kindest people I have ever met. Wonderful to talk to outside of classroom. Knows the material and gives lectures without notes. Hard to follow sometimes but let him know he will clarify. Class participation depends on people in class. Learned more in his classes than any other. Hard classes but VERY worth it! Difficult class. He has a very dry style of lecturing, not much give-and-take with the class - if nobody asks a question he'll just talk for 65 straight minutes, no problem. Challenging material, and he doesn't seem to be great at making sure people who may be struggling understand it. Symbolic Logic is required for Comp Sci majors and it can be pretty difficult. He teaches it clearly. Can sometimes be condescending. You get to choose what percentage of your final grade is from quizes vs the final exam.
