Hilarious class about humor theory and the ethics behind it. Prof is super knowledgeable. This is also a difficult class. The professor is not afraid to debate you, say you are wrong, or cold call; but he won't dock points you for flubbing a question or two. He is caring and quite fair. Bottom line: great professor, but not an easy A.COMM1320 2026-01-20 21:42:03 +0000 UTC
Can be very rude/makes unnecessary comments, doesn't let you use technology for notes & doesn't use slides (hard to keep up with his accent), lots of presentations & purposely quizzes/argues with you in front of the class. SO MANY READINGS THAT DON'T MAKE SENSE. Has one midterm and it tanked everyone's grades. He is very funny & engaging tho.COMM1331 2025-04-14 22:28:06 +0000 UTC
This was my hardest class but also the only class where I would be interested for the whole 2 hour lecture and never get the urge to look at my phone. It requires a lot of work and practice but Hoppmann is a very funny and engaging prof. Beware of LOTS of class participation and solving problems before the class, but it prepares you for the exam.COMM1120 2024-11-24 19:11:44 +0000 UTC
He's so knowledgeable and he's great but he does expect the highest quality of work from his students. Be ready to really put your back into the work, but if you want to learn something real I definitely recommend him.HONR3309 2021-08-21 09:45:41 +0000 UTC
He is witty and caring and always has time to help outside of class. Reading the textbook is key to pass any of his quizzes, but other than that, the workload isn't heavy. He is passionate and extremely well prepared in what he teaches. I don't usually write reviews like this but he really is a gem. Take his class if you can.COMM1112 2020-12-04 02:17:28 +0000 UTC
He's a little intimidating but he's honestly just a sweet guy. He jokes around a lot and isn't afraid to debate anything you say so don't speak without thinking.COMM2310 2018-04-09 20:45:25 +0000 UTC
Professor Hoppmann is an extremely interesting person, and also very intelligent. We are his first ever section of Speaking Up For Justice, an honors course that he has designed himself. The class is fun and thought-provoking, and even more so with Michael's input. I hope this class is kept around for other students.HONR1310 2017-03-22 19:04:31 +0000 UTC
Class can get a bit boring, but he is genuinely interested in his Classical Rhetoric material and teaches it well. Easy grader and always curves exams. Rarely homework, mostly readings you can get away with not doing, and 2 exams. Easy A.COMM1310 2011-12-19 12:57:17 +0000 UTC
Hoppmann is AWESOME. He is so passionate and really makes you comfortable with getting up in front of everyone... A little nerve racking but altogether I loved the class!COMM112 2010-03-25 09:58:49 +0000 UTC
Professor Hoppmann! What an amazing public speaking educator. I took his summer course so everything was condensed. However, he does an incredible job to help you improve your public speaking skills. We all loved him, funny accent. 4 speeches and a final exam. He's only here for a year or 2 more so if you can, DEFINITELY take his class!!!CMNU112 2009-08-13 19:42:46 +0000 UTC
Really cool new class that dives deep into the philosophy and ethics behind humor. Highly recommend for those interested in that intersection, just don't expect this to be a super chill 1000 level class (i'd say it should be closer to a 2000 level in terms of expectations especially for COMM standards). One of my favorites of the semester!COMM1320 2025-11-05 03:50:09 +0000 UTC
Relatively difficult but extremely rewarding. Readings were often dense and time-consuming, but when debriefed in class, very interesting. The content started theoretical and then became more practical. Prof Hoppmann is likable and clearly passionate, but will also push you to meet high expectations. Prepare to get up front and present/debate.COMM1331 2025-04-14 16:59:54 +0000 UTC
Michael is hilarious but also an incredible teacher! He makes the content very accesible and interesting, and I loved the introduction to logic and argumentation. A little heavy on group projects, but everything was valuable and relevant. Love the reversed lecture format of the course as well!COMM1120 2024-11-20 19:27:13 +0000 UTC
Michael is absolutely amazing. He's hilarious. Amazing at what he teaches. Makes every lecture interesting. I never wanted to skip classCOMM1112 2019-02-26 04:38:39 +0000 UTC
He's a nice guy but, he really doesn't teach the class very well. He makes us do group presentations (only 2 people in each group) teach the class a genre on classical rhetoric on which we have never learned before. He doesn't even go over it himself afterwards. His reading materials are really long and his tests have a weird format..it's tricky.COMM2310 2010-03-25 20:55:19 +0000 UTC
