She's a good teacher. Definitely very knowledgeable in her field. Very accommodating for flexible deadlines. Late days for every HW. Lengthy midterms and finals, very straightforward final project. Takes in-class pop quizzes that are 15% of your grade, so you can't miss those. Otherwise, lectures are slow, but interesting. Good class.DS4400 2026-04-28 22:30:32 +0000 UTC
I really liked this class and felt I actually learned a lot for once. Some of the homeworks were a little difficult but there was usually extra credit on the assignment to make up.CY4100 2026-03-28 23:44:46 +0000 UTC
Professor Oprea is clearly very knowledgeable about the field and her lectures are always well organized and easy to follow. Very math heavy which you'd expect in an ML course but I was always able to follow along. Midterm, non cumulative final, and super easy pop quizzes from time to time.DS4400 2026-04-16 18:17:32 +0000 UTC
The lectures aren't super helpful for exams, she spends a lot of time going over theory and complicated math on the board that we don't get tested on. That being said I learned a lot in the class and she obviously cares about her students and what she is teaching. Grade is made up by 4 homeworks, a project, a midterm and a non cumulative final.DS4400 2026-04-16 16:48:14 +0000 UTC
came into this class hoping to learn a lot about ML... feeling pretty dissatisfied now. the lectures are really math heavy (this class has no math prereqs!!!) and she is difficult to understand. homeworks are mostly coding based even when there is barely any coding instruction in this course. stay home and teach yourself bc she is really bad...DS4400 2026-04-12 16:29:59 +0000 UTC
Rough lectures that you're forced to go to under threat of pop quiz. Quiet voice and strong Eastern European accent make lectures difficult to understand. Disorganized slides and theory-focused lecture make it difficult to learn anything. Learned more from Google than her after I stopped going to lectures a month in.DS4400 2026-04-06 15:59:37 +0000 UTC
I wish to learn more about how to actually use and apply ML, but basically all the lecture is about theory and math. The homework is heavy, especially the coding part is barely taught in class. Her voice is so small and with a heavy accent. Instead of wasting two hours, you could just learn the lecture yourself online.DS4400 2026-02-26 05:40:02 +0000 UTC
Thick accent and can not understand the first thing she taught. The type of professor to push the midterm 4 days ahead with less than a 24 hour notice. Lots of homework and not understanding at all. Do not take her and I doubt northeastern is going to keep her much longerDS4400 2026-02-24 04:32:33 +0000 UTC
I was hoping I would love this class and learn a lot about implementing cool machine learning algorithms on cool datasets. The course material is bad(only have done GD after a month) and she is so boring that its impossible to pay attention. I genuinely hope she reads this and tries to do better.DS4400 2026-02-12 17:22:25 +0000 UTC
Lectures are unreasonably complex, spends the whole class proving formulas rather than showing us how to use them which is what is actually on the homework assignments/quizzes. I learn more about the material from a google search. Gives random pop quizzes at the beginning of class and calls out students who are even two minutes late.DS4400 2026-02-10 20:00:13 +0000 UTC
Prof. Oprea is incredibly knowledgeable in her field. The material can be dry at times, but is in depth and thorough. The homework can be very long, but she and the TA's are easily accessible. She listens to students requests and wants us to succeed. Most of the grade is a Final and Final Project.DS4400 2020-11-20 15:35:47 +0000 UTC
