Had Tony for Fundamentals of Music Theory. Class is graded on 8 chapter tests, many quizzes, a midterm, a final, and 3 performances quizzes. Listen. Prof. Deritis can be a lot of things. He's encourageable, stubborn, and a bit of a theory snob. Yes I've cried in his class. Sometimes he makes you feel dumb. BUT. This man has had my back unlike any other professor at Northeastern. He doesn't sugarcoat who he is as a person and he doesn't lie to you. Took Design Thinking course under him. Does not use any PPT or anything to teach. Does not teach anything. He has a instruction and tell students to work on it. An absolutely pointless and horribly designed class. Tony, believing he could not teach the class himself, brought in other professors to do the work for him. Our poor TA nearly graded everything. Awful class. Described as a basic arts appreciation class, but the readings require a lot of knowledge of music/painting/poetry etc. Tony is very into himself and will spend most of the class listing his accomplishments or his desire for the students to fail his midterm. Tony is by far the best professor ive had a northeastern. If you put in the effort to do well, youll get an easy A and hes very passionate about what he teaches. Extremely difficult (read: impossible) to do decently without prior music experience. The guest lectures range from a chance to catch up on sleep to extremely engaging.
