Bernal gets very mixed reviews. He doesn't have clear lecture notes; he teaches straight from the black board. He can be a bit scattered. BUT, if you really put in the time to attend office hours with him and summarize notes class is not difficult. I had him for statics which made a huge difference. Bernal was a decent professor when he prepared for class, but often he prioritized other items leaving the TA to do much of the work. This resulted in a chaotic final exam where things we were told to expect on the final were left off, and problems were put on that the class was unprepared for. Professor Bernal is the best Structural Dynamics teacher that I've ever had. Sometimes he thinks faster than he thought so you have to be very careful to listen what did he mean. Only way to pass this class is to get Bernal to like you....Had a fantastic TA who provided so much help if you needed it. Material and content are all over the place. His lectures can seem a bit overwhelming to understand, especially in the beginning, but if you keep going to class and recitations, things connect well towards the end. A majority of the material was taught in the beginning, there was lots of time for review later. Bernal is quite smart, but by taking this course with him is is clear he struggles to communicate the lecture material. Lectures were confusing due to algebra errors he made and round about examples he would give to explain concepts. Bernal is a super caring professor, maybe my favorite at Northeastern. He really wants you to understand and will take as much time as you need to try to help. Taking statics with him before analysis was definitely helpful, as he has a unique teaching method. Asking questions is crucial! Bernal is genuinely a nice guy. He was very available for office hours and email. Sometimes he could be all over the place and not very structured, but if you were confused, he would work with you until you understood it. He never left a student behind.
