Bernal was a decent professor when he prepared for class, but often he prioritized other items leaving the TA to do much of the work. This resulted in a chaotic final exam where things we were told to expect on the final were left off, and problems were put on that the class was unprepared for. Bernal is a super caring professor, maybe my favorite at Northeastern. He really wants you to understand and will take as much time as you need to try to help. Taking statics with him before analysis was definitely helpful, as he has a unique teaching method. Asking questions is crucial! Professor Bernal is the best Structural Dynamics teacher that I've ever had. Sometimes he thinks faster than he thought so you have to be very careful to listen what did he mean. His lectures can seem a bit overwhelming to understand, especially in the beginning, but if you keep going to class and recitations, things connect well towards the end. A majority of the material was taught in the beginning, there was lots of time for review later. He's clearly a genius and is very accessible - his office hours are basically whenever you need him (including weekends and late nights). He is extremely bad at giving partial credit, so don't depend on knowing only part of the process to answer questions. His tests are hard, this class is really hard. Bernal is quite smart, but by taking this course with him is is clear he struggles to communicate the lecture material. Lectures were confusing due to algebra errors he made and round about examples he would give to explain concepts. Bernal is genuinely a nice guy. He was very available for office hours and email. Sometimes he could be all over the place and not very structured, but if you were confused, he would work with you until you understood it. He never left a student behind. Really funny guy. Lectures can be a bit hectic but if u get the basic gist you're golden. Tests can be pretty difficult but don't worry, the curve will be your saving grace. Do past exams for good practice for the exams. Homework can be difficult too but it's mostly for completion.
