I feel bad leaving this review bc Prof Blake is such a nice guy, but this class was odd. While the material was cool, I felt like class time was not used effectively. He spoke really fast and class felt like I was watching it through somebody else's eyes. The amount of homework was also wild, even as someone who enjoys writing. Just a pleasant and caring person who clearly has a passion for what he teaches. Most of the class time was spent watching movies, which is fun. If you like writing, this class is thoughtful, interesting, and a great elective overall. But be warned, there is a hell of a lot of writing. Lots of reading. Gave good feedback. Great in-class discussions. No 2 classes were the same. Students helped each other w/possible sources for their individual research projects. Classroom felt like a community. Didn't always understand students' perspectives. He is incredibly demanding. I took his Film 101 class this semester, and it was packed with work. We had daily discussion board posts of at least 350 words, weekly screen notes for films, and six quizzes, each accompanied by an essay. If you come to class and try and participate you will succeed in his class. He makes the class environment very welcoming and if you get sick or anything he is the most understanding of your situation. Professor Blake is a great teacher and knowledgeable about almost every film. There is a significant issue with the criteria of this class. This class requires you to watch over 30 movies in which you will write specific screening notes. He's gives excellent feedback on papers and open responses. His Film 101 lectures are pact full of all the information you'll need for quizzes/midterms. All necessary knowledge is within his lecture notes. This was one of my favorite classes by far, Professor Blake is enthusiastic and knowledgable about film, he teaches because he wants to share his passion. Speeding up the movies can make the workload lighter. He is an easy grader, if you put in visible effort you get an A. *MSCR 2895 REVIEW* Professor Blake is extremely passionate and knowledgeable. As someone who took this credit purely out of interest, he made the class far more than what it was on the surface. Prof Blake is a nice guy. Even though this class is honestly a lot of work because you have to keep up with the readings and watch all the films, he makes it interesting. He goes a fast in lecture but he posts everything online so you don't really need to go to class.
