Nationalism is a clumsily put-together course comprised of loosely related concepts and Prof. Barreto's niche interests. He rarely gave a thoughtful explanation of the topics he introduced, instead going on tangents or fixating on minute details. His lectures are boring and one-sided and there are few opportunities to participate.POLS3418 2024-12-13 15:46:46 +0000 UTC
Although I get annoyed with the hours I spend prepping for his very challenging exams, he is exactly what a professor should be: remarkably knowledgable, engaging and fair. I took an intermediate course with him, and it was certainly challenging but that's what school should be. Great professor.POLS2330 2019-03-18 00:03:19 +0000 UTC
Super smart, and a really nice guy. I wish I had more time to take more of his classes.POLS3475 2015-05-05 22:41:31 +0000 UTC
By far the best and most knowledgable professor I've had at NU. He expects a lot and there is a huge term paper and two exams all worth 30% but he is also always willing to help students out. Lectures helped make sense of some very difficult reading material and learned a ton. I would recommend this prof. to anyone who is willing to do the work.POL510 2008-08-24 23:24:10 +0000 UTC
Amaing! Professor Barreto made what could have been a very boring subject (Int'l Law) incredibly interesting!!! He does expect you to listen in class and know your stuff for tests and paper(s), but you are in school to learn. If you zone out for 10 seconds in class you might get lost...be warned!!! He's GREAT!!!POLU510 2007-01-10 21:23:30 +0000 UTC
Amazing professor, super intelligent and will often crack a joke, definitely take lots of notes when you go to classINTLLAW 2006-02-24 12:49:52 +0000 UTC
One of the most arrogant professors I have ever come across. If you can put up with his smugness, he's very knowledgable- esp. if you want to know more about Puerto Rico.LATINOPOLITICS 2006-01-06 01:07:50 +0000 UTC
The readings are a little dry but his lectures are good and clear. Hard exams but he'll definitely help you out-really nice guy.LATINOPOLTICS 2005-10-27 17:49:42 +0000 UTC
Barreto is excellent at making class interesting. He is also really funny and i have never every time i had a problem or question i emailed him and he returned me an email. If you dont goto class, dont take his course. For one you need his notes and two, he takes attendance as 10% of grade!INTERNATIONALL 2005-04-05 07:53:59 +0000 UTC

Professor Barreto has very interesting lectures and is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. However, the level of reading he assigns is not reasonable. He assigns about 200 pages a week, which combined with other classes is not manageable.POLS3418 2024-09-29 22:27:04 +0000 UTC
Brilliant guy, lectures are long but really interesting if you choose to participate. American Political Thought was definitely a harder class and you have to do the reading but if you do that, listen, and study, an A is 100% feasible.POLS2330 2015-09-10 15:08:07 +0000 UTC

Had him a LONG time ago, but I still remember his class. He was really good. Knows his stuff, keeps the class entertaining and fun. I highly recommend taking any class from him!INTLLAW 2005-01-11 15:10:37 +0000 UTC
Professor Barreto is very knowledgeable about his field, but the class would benefit from papers and more opportunities to discuss the interesting concepts brought up in class. Tests are a mix of lots of information that you need to carefully listen to the lectures to absorb and then write down, or else you will miss it. Overall interesting classPOLS3418 2024-04-23 01:59:13 +0000 UTC
