From the reviews of lower-level, first- year students, I wasn't surprised. Professor Ogden is a magnificent professor with a particular lecture style. If you are new to college, I can understand some difficulty. She is relatively useless. The only reason I passed is because of the amazing TA. If you don't go to class, you will fail the class. Ogden was great. She is a scholar, so expect A LOT of reading, in addition to the lectures. She lives and breathes Chinese culture. Contrary to what most have written here, I think her lectures can be fascinating and I personally appreciate her style of teaching. True, she doesn't drone through a powerpoint, but if that's what I wanted I'd take my classes online. She is an intellectual with huge subject knowledge. Worst prof I've had at NU. I was very interested in the class material, that is until classes began. She would get caught up with unimportant material, while glossing over the important stuff. If you get to know her, you'll find that the experience of her classes improves tenfold. If you're grade-grubbing and non-participitory, you won't get as much out of it. Ppl asked her every class where she was on her syllabus, cause she was all over the place. I wanted to do a difficult but interesting topic for the final paper the TA told me not to strain myself & write it on a conflict I already have written about just w/an IR point of view.
