Dr. Otero was great. The textbook is free and online. It is not used for the class, but it is beneficial for self-study. Her tests go more in depth then the lectures, so be well-versed with the material. There is extra credit, she cares about you & your success, and she is approachable. I do not recommend taking this course, it was not worth the struggle. The lectures were boring and based on disorganized slides, and the exams were super difficult and based on small slide details. Terrible class... however, if you're deciding between her and Potts-Santone probably take Otero. Avoid this class if you can, but if you must take it: memorize every slide in the presentation and before the exam, practice with the textbook problems she provides (you'll get an A). Otero was such a fun and caring prof. She genuinely cares about her class and listens to feedback. She would give breaks during class, and tell jokes/funny stories. She allows test corrections on certain problems and extra credit opportunities. Textbook is not required, nor used, unless for some practice problems to study with. higk shes great. i went to office hours often and i was originally supposed to get a B+ but ended up with an A- (AYYYY). you don't really need to use the textbooks. if u download the slides, all of her notes are in the speaker notes section. biggest tip is DO THE ASSIGNED PRACTICE QUESTIONS on time. its relatively similar to her exam questionsBIOL1111 2025-12-16 21:21:33 +0000 UTC
She lectures a lot and can be difficult to keep focused. You are expected to memorize an unrealistic amount of small details from all of the slides. A lot of your grade relies on her exams and the wording on the questions makes the entire exam feel like a riddle. Super easy, lectures were boring. All of her tests are free-response and direct copies of the slides she presents in class. Her class difficulty is similar to a high-school level AP Environmental Studies class and there was no final - just a project. Prof Otero honestly gets a bad rep. Yes, her lectures can get boring, but they're recorded and attendance isn't required. Her exams are all memorization so study just about everything and don't cram. Prof Otero is a good professor, I learned a lot in the lectures but it helps more if you do the homework readings. But her exams are terrible, despite studying and understanding the concept I would still get really low scores. Grade is heavily based on midterms which she doesn't curve or offer corrections anymore and the questions are worded so confusingly. The tests go way more into detail than lecture and you have to study so much to get a good grade.
