She gives tons of extra credit, but the tests seemed a bit excessive. Also, half the items regarding the topics in the Caribbean and Central America were just flat out wrong. I took this for my minor, it was easy but SOOO boring. The kindest professor I've ever had, pushed deadlines back and removed readings when the class was struggling with other classes. Exams are a little tough but are open note and if you study all of the readings and organize your notes you'll do well. Carie is awesome, she brings a sardonic wit to all of her classes and she is a pleasure to have as a teacher. She expects a lot of her students (for higher level classes more so) but she is also very understanding. I messed up submitting my final paper online and she was like, "whatever, I get it!" Such a sweet and caring teacher. Attendance not mandatory, but helpful. She puts all the powerpoints online before class and plays clips that really help you understand the material. I took three classes with her and never regretted it every time. She gives a lot of readings but goes over it the next day. She expects you to know at least the general idea of the reading. I took this class for a general elective as a biology major w/ a english minor. I really enjoyed the class and felt like I learned, however you really have to read the required texts/ watch the documentaries in order to do well. Unless this class is required for your major/other anth classes you want to take, don't take this for an "easy elective." The professor is very accomplished and passionate, but tests are dependent on memorizing details from the 25ish readings/videos you must have done that unit (videos can be up to an hour). very enthusiastic but it got very boring for me personally. only annoying thing abt this class was in person paper quizzes (4 of them, 5th online) for an elective class. for quizzes you will HAVE to know the readings and films as the short responses (has multiple parts) will ask you only about readings and films. overall an okay classANTH1101 2025-11-21 03:34:03 +0000 UTC
The professor is very enthusiastic, but the amount of supplemental readings/videos expected to be viewed outside of class makes it very discouraging. She also made the exams in person and closed note, so you have to remember every detail from the readings/videos due to how specific the questions are. Prof Hersh is an extremely passionate, engaging, and accomplished anthropologist, but unfortunately her class falls short. Tests are too often and too difficult, and focus on regurgitating small details from any of the units 25-odd readings or videos instead of actually understanding concepts. This class was so so so easy. The only real downside was that there were so many readings outside of class and that the exams pulled specific examples from them, but it was still very doable since all the exams were online and open note. Prof Hersh was vary enthusiastic about the subject matter which really came through in her lectures.
