Bruell is a really good teacher and lecturer. His class can be a bit boring and feel repetitive (especially if you've already done criminology in the past), but he has a talent for sparkling debates in class about various subjects. Even though participation is not graded (but attendance is, be careful), he still manages to get people engaged.CRIM3010 2026-01-28 20:24:21 +0000 UTC
Provides all the materials you need to thoroughly understand the material. Homework is weekly and takes some time, but not unmanageable. Midterm and final are open-book, open-note with 4.5 hours to finish (more than enough time). Be careful of the methods you use, he WILL accuse you of cheating if they aren't what you were taught in class.INSH6500 2025-12-17 02:23:06 +0000 UTC
Would do an in class assignment and day “it wasn't in depth enough” but then when more information was added, still said it wasn't enough. The length of the final was not that clear either.CRIMCRIM 2025-05-07 03:42:17 +0000 UTC
This was an online summer class and the modules were organized very well. In my opinion, the grading was a bit on the tougher side, but nothing too crazy. I would definitely take another class with Professor Bruell again!3040 2023-06-29 11:20:40 +0000 UTC
Even though this grad class was online, all the modules were so organized and the discussion posts were short and to the point. Does not assign busy work and the readings are actually helpful and you learn something!CJ6202 2023-03-21 22:56:21 +0000 UTC
He's nice, but he gets sidetracked and sometimes fails at refocusing the class. He does pick minute details out of vast amounts of information, so be sure you know your theories.JUVEN362 2012-05-13 16:32:30 +0000 UTC
Excellent teacher despite being a grad student. Really cares about getting his students to understand the course material. Makes class interesting despite the dry topic. Attendance is graded based on easy short pop quizzes. One of the best.CJ3600 2011-03-18 02:48:39 +0000 UTC
He is a very smart guy and relates the material well to the students. Very clear lecturer and there are some pop quizzes. The research assignment is kind of a pain but not too hard. Bruell is very fair and wants students to do well.CRIM3600 2010-04-03 17:49:14 +0000 UTC

Awesome teacher, awesome class. Has small quizzes throughout the year, but crams most of them in at the end. Has 3 tests throughout the year, so midterms and finals are only a third of the semester. Attendance isnt taken, but you need to take notes. Book is never used, and tests are all multiple choice, t/f, and short answerCJ102 2009-04-14 12:00:07 +0000 UTC

Great professor. Uses Powerpoint lectures and a lot of discussions - always keeps the students interested. Very fair tests - just study the slides and read the articles. Pop quizzes are pretty easy, especially because he drops 2. Great class.CJU102 2008-12-10 21:35:27 +0000 UTC
Good guy - although I'm not sure he grasped the idea that none of us really had an interest in criminal justice, his lectures and discussions were interesting and personal, he treated us like adults, and his tests were completely fair. Just make sure you read the articles he assigns - he's known for a pop quiz here and thereCJCJ10 2008-11-17 20:39:41 +0000 UTC
He's a really good guy. I would highly recamend him. He doesn't think he is better than you and likes to see both sides of an issue. Talks to his students as peers. His classes are all powerpoint presentation, but he likes to keep the class involved with conversation. Also i never even bought the book for either of the 2 classes, hes pretty easy.ETHICJJ 2008-04-02 17:53:28 +0000 UTC
Professor Bruell is a gem—engaging, organized, and deeply knowledgeable. He blends humor with sensitivity, especially on tough topics. Once, during a domestic violence unit, he bought out a student's donut fundraiser supporting survivors and shared them with the class, saying, “Actions speak louder than words."CRIM3010 2025-10-22 21:05:28 +0000 UTC
