Prof. Toher is a nice person, but seriously beware of taking accelerated chem with him. The workload is egregious, and he takes points off for everything. It is extremely hard to get a good grade, esp if you are pre-med I would look into alternate options.Chem1100 2025-11-05 16:40:18 +0000 UTC

Intense amount of information to process. Very passionate and nice guy, but the volume of information is intense. Midterms and finals are in two parts each, and each part is allotted 2 hours... you will use almost all of that time for both parts on both the midterm and final. This professor is extremely and unjustifiably difficult on his students. He severely lacks empathy, and I feel gets enjoyment out of instilling fear and stress into his students. As someone who has been in college for four years, I have yet to encounter a professor this unnecessarily difficult. Struggled the entire class. If you haven't taken a higher chem class in high school, you will struggle a lot. Lectures are extremely dense, even though some of it wasn't even important. I had Professor Toher for gen chem 1 in the fall and I will say three things: he gives A LOT of assignments, his assignments are very tough, but he is a great professor. He knows how to teach the material in an effective manner and really helped me get through gen chem 1. I had to drop Toher's class after two months. Chem 1 was in essence a Chem 2 class hidden behind course code 1100. Also... he's not suited for an online format. Professor Toher was one of the best lecturers I have ever had. He is clearly very passionate about chemistry (especially orgo) and cares a lot about his students' learning. His lecture style is very clear and understandable. He provided us with lecture podcasts. Lots of chances for extra credit to boost your grade. Professor Toher is an amazing instructor! Yes, his lectures are long. BUT he makes jokes during them (which I found hilarious) and he really wants you to understand the material and to pass! This is not an easy class by any means. Toher is tough, probably the hardest Chem professor at Nu, but the amount you learn is incredible. I got a B in the class and Im scoring 85th and 90th percentile on MCAT chem related questions. What does that tell you? If you study and go to recitation he provides all the necessary tools to succeed in his class. He gives a good amount of extra credit and the practice problems prepare you very well for exams. Do the problem sets and have good attendance and you should be fine.CHEM2 2013-04-27 21:13:29 +0000 UTC
