I wish they would stop doing Service Learning; it's a waste of time every week to go to some random place to practice Chinese. Service Learning, in general, is one of the biggest stresses in this class and simply adds more onto your plate than what's necessary. It's an hour a week, but you have to commute.CHNS1102 2026-02-03 18:22:32 +0000 UTC
Dong Laoshi is the best. She is tough on you but she loves her students like her own children. Give her your best effort and she will give you hers.CHNS3102 2025-07-24 12:13:07 +0000 UTC
I took her class and I can pretty much say that the textbook is your everything. All her powerpoints are material from the book. She's very knowledgable, explains clearly to students, makes sure that at least everyone from the class speaks once during that class and is overall a good teacher. It's hard to get an A though so you need to work hard.CHNS1101 2014-10-04 19:33:08 +0000 UTC
Love Dong Laoshi!! She is one of the best teachers I've had at NU. You do a ton of work, but her style makes it easy to understand and retain. I definitely feel confident in my speaking and writing skills. She's also so nice and genuinely cares about how well you're doing.LNC102 2009-05-10 23:55:49 +0000 UTC
Professor Dong is great! You definitely have to put in a lot of work and studying for this class, but if you do she really appreciates it and your grade will reflect that. She is an extremely nice person and makes learning such a hard language fun! Definitely take her class!!LNC101 2009-03-27 03:07:57 +0000 UTC
I don't even have her as a professor but she's hooked me up with so much stuff in China ie. internship, housing. She's got mad guanxi, like tons of it.CHINESE 2008-04-07 21:14:13 +0000 UTC
had previous chinese experience so the class was easy, but prof dong is the sweetest woman if you try. participate in the class chants like everyone else - she appreciates it. NEED to go to class, not just for attendance reasons, but it will help you tenfold. loves to help kids, just help her by preparing for classLNCU101 2008-04-03 23:49:40 +0000 UTC
She's a good teacher who helps students get exposed to the language. If you have prior experience with Chinese the class should be a breeze, but you do have to commit a fair amount of time to it.LNCU151 2007-12-12 19:04:34 +0000 UTC

Prof Dong is a nice person, but her teaching style is not the best. The class is very much lecture heavy and not many class activities, which would make the class much more interesting. Hard tests, even if you study for them and a lot of homework.CHNS1102 2019-12-10 19:53:48 +0000 UTC
I took this class because I am pretty fluent in Chinese and thought it would be a good gpa booster but it wasn't. I feel like she purposely grades me harder than other people because I'm fluent and she also grades so hard on participation. She also gives so much homework and projects that I feel she doesn't give enough time forCHNS3102 2024-12-14 19:29:44 +0000 UTC
dong laoshi is super sweet! she wants students to learn and will always help you if you ask for it. students sometimes take advantage of that but she's smart and won't let you get an A unless you've worked in the class and deserve it. def try to take chinese with her if you can!LNC102 2008-05-10 13:00:10 +0000 UTC
Professor Dong is a wonderful women. You won't be able to slip by this class without studying, but the work is porportional to the time she gives you. I get A's on all her quizes and you really retain a lot of vocab in such a short time. She makes learning a new language extremely simple!!!LNC101 2007-11-23 00:48:27 +0000 UTC
Adorable!!! Such an amazing teacher, and I love how she laughs at her own jokes. its a foreign language class so you get what you put into it, but she's very helpful and friendly, she really cares about her students, wish I had her again.CHNS1102 2013-04-07 21:47:00 +0000 UTC
I wouldn't say she is really good, but she is not really bad. I had her for 2201, it wouldn't let me choose. This class has the most amount of homework. There are a lot of projects and she calls on people and then makes them say the word/sentence properly over and over again. She is very understanding and brings tea and food for usCHNS3102 2023-04-14 03:16:06 +0000 UTC
