Worst teacher ever, do not take this class unless it is required. He does not care about his students at all. I do not know how the University has not done something about it. He is unprofessional. Good for lower level, but absolutely awful once you get to intermediate. There is 1 hour of class a week and he consistently leaves early. He clearly doesn't care and has taught NOTHING but is mad when you don't learn. Grading is completely subjective based on if he likes you. Waste of time and money. Worst teacher. Doesn't follow the syllabus and then gets mad when the class is confused about what quiz/hw we have. When I ask clarifying questions, he yells at me for not knowing the material or checking the syllabus, even though I did. Called a classmate a refugee. Made me hate my native language. Shakir Mustafa is an engaging professor with a good sense of humor who is eager to teach. His lessons do get a little bit dry sometimes, and it shows if he is in a bad mood. Absolutely, without peer, the best teacher I had in my whole educational experience. Shakir has a wonderful and worldly view of both education and culture. He is eager to teach anyone who is ready to learn. I hear great things about his Arabic Language class, but as for the Arab culture class: don't waste your time. The projects assigned are longwinded and tedious (much like the lectures themselves), and i rarely ever walked out of class feeling like i learned anything new. Shakir is a great teacher. If you actually want to learn the language, pick him. Once you're done with his class you've great arabic skills. Thus, his class is a little demanding.But he understands if the work is a lot, he will cut it down. He is a funny and engaging professor, but just get ready to put the work in on your own time. Arabic is difficult, and you have to do the textbook readings and homework to avoid falling behind.
