I took several classes from Bill Crotty at Northwestern University in the 1980s. He was one of my favorite professors. He did have tangents, but don't discount them - he taught through the tangents too... I found him a delight, and so different from the other poli sci profs. I never had any idea what was going on in this class. The lectures were seemingly random, if you could understand what he was saying at all. The tests were essays and there were essays due often, which is fine but not when they literally have nothing to do with what he's talking about in class. Don't take a class with this professor. He treats students with contempt, will not answer a direct question via email but instead chastise the asker that it was covered in class, and will spend a whole class describing exactly how disappointed he is that everyone did so poorly on the midterm (when everyone got Bs). this guy is a ****bag. his lectures are boring and make no sense at all. he is the most insenstive professor i have ever had in my life. was open about telling me he gave me a "pity grade" and he should have graded me much worse.
