Very caring and fair professor. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and cares about their wellbeing. Easy to get help outside of class. Tests are a bit difficult and require critical thinking but he gives 3 extra points on every test. Lots of homework but ample time to complete it. Only critique: study guides often didn't match actual tests.CHEM1161 2025-12-18 21:48:24 +0000 UTC
He was such an amazing chem professor. He made the concepts seem so simple and was so nice. The homework wasn't too bad, just a little tedious.CHEM1161 2025-12-13 01:06:36 +0000 UTC
loved him! just do the homework and go to office hours if neededCHEM1161 2025-12-11 02:57:02 +0000 UTC
Very kind and accessible and a great, great professor (like the best I've had thus far). Material was tough but if you come to lecture and go to office hours he's great at explaining things. Also gives extra credit and practice problems on Aktiv are super helpful on exams, and he'll replace your lowest midterm score so a good grade is very feasibleCHEM1161 2025-05-06 20:15:32 +0000 UTC
Super kind and caring, and great at teaching (like the best I've had yet). The material is hard but going to lectures and office hours made it seem very simple. Very feasible to succeed in the course if you put effort in, he also gives extra credit which is nice and will replace your lowest midterm exam grade.CHEM1161 2025-05-06 20:06:39 +0000 UTC
If you're taking CHEM1161, take it with Dan Matthew. I would recommend the chem ramp up (it was extra credit but it was actually helpful). An A is totally achievable by completing all the homework (unlimited tries) and studying using the practice exams and aktiv problems. Of course, try your best to stay proactive the class can move fast at times.CHEM1161 2025-04-30 13:20:30 +0000 UTC
The actual goat. I had zero chemistry knowledge coming in and finished with an A, and that's all thanks to Dr. Dan's teaching! Take notes on the homework, study the practice exams, and focus on what you're struggling with. Also the ramp up is helpful if you have no idea (like me) what to expect coming into a chem course. Thank you!!!CHEM1161 2025-04-28 23:42:25 +0000 UTC
I would absolutely recommend Prof Matthew for gen chem!! If you attend class regularly and do the homework assignments you'll be set up for success in his class. He's a good lecturer and easy to follow, he takes notes during class that you follow along on. Attendance is mandatory, but he allows a couple of absences. He's also super nice :)CHEM1161 2025-04-28 13:49:42 +0000 UTC
By far the best Chem professor I have ever had! He cares about how the students are learning more than grading, and his lectures really made me understand the concepts so much more clearly. Plus, he gives many opportunities for extra credit. Recitation can feel like more of a chore but you get a bump up in your grade if you go to all of them.CHEM1161 2025-04-24 15:19:59 +0000 UTC
BEST PROFESSOR SO FAR! I was so worried about taking a good chem professor because the class can be difficult, but what you put in is what you get out. Biggest advice is follow along lectures, and you will be perfectly set. I went to almost all office hours and he bonded with all the students, taking hours out of his week and day to help. love him!CHEM1161 2025-04-22 22:25:35 +0000 UTC
DAN MATTHEW AKA THE BEST PROF EVER!!!! He is an amazing professor. He really knows how to teach. He gives 4 midterm exams and a cumulative final exam. If you score higher on the final than one of your midterms he will replace your lowest midterm grade with the final exam grade. He gives tons of practice and is willing to meet with you anytime!CHEM1161 2025-04-17 16:53:28 +0000 UTC
I LOVE DR.DAN! He is one of the best professors I've had here at Northeastern. His lectures are straightforward and the activ practice questions he gives really help for his exams. He really helped me enjoy chemistry and solidify concepts that I forgot in high school. If you understand the material well, the exams should be straightforward.CHEM1161 2025-04-17 03:44:17 +0000 UTC
Dr. Dan is the best! If you're taking chemistry, definitely try to take it with him. He takes notes with the class, so the lecture stays at a good pace. He's willing to reexplain anything if a student is confused. He's so easy to reach outside of class and his office hours are very useful.CHEM1161 2025-04-10 18:47:34 +0000 UTC
I love this man. So amazing at seeing what works and does not work for students and changing his teaching style around that. There were so many resources for the exams. He is so kind and very approachable at office hours. You will always get 100 on the hw because you get unlimited tries.CHEM1161 2025-03-18 00:39:18 +0000 UTC
Good professor and makes the most out of lectures. Notes are really helpful, and going to his office hours are too.CHEM1161 2024-09-04 02:14:42 +0000 UTC
