He shows you the "why" rather than HOW to solve the problems. I basically taught myself how to do the problems and I got a tutor. He gives you free points for attending class and recitations, and homework is graded on completion. Homework and Aktiv do not help with the exams, but they're good for basic practice. Everyone's first exam tanks their total grade. LISTEN TO ME. Do every single problem on Aktiv practice problems before exam cuz the hard questions are on exams. Know/memorize the concepts and know why they came to be. Know what is happening on a super detailed level. Everything taught in lectures are on the exam. Dr. Dan was a good professor, only thing that annoyed me was mandatory attendance, although he did allow up to 6 free absences. Tests are tough but manageable if studied a bit in advance for. I genuinely think he's a really nice guy who cares about his students and is very passionate. However, in class, you focus more on why something is the way it is rather than actually using or applying the formulas, etc for a test. So homework is basically you teaching yourself chemistry. Really awesome professor. Never took chemistry before, but he helped me understand everything. Even when I bombed a test, I still felt proud of what I learned, and I eventually improved. Very caring and fair professor. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and cares about their wellbeing. Easy to get help outside of class. Tests are a bit difficult and require critical thinking but he gives 3 extra points on every test. Lots of homework but ample time to complete it. Very kind and accessible and a great, great professor (like the best I've had thus far). Material was tough but if you come to lecture and go to office hours he's great at explaining things. If you're taking CHEM1161, take it with Dan Matthew. I would recommend the chem ramp up (it was extra credit but it was actually helpful). An A is totally achievable by completing all the homework (unlimited tries) and studying using the practice exams and aktiv problems.
