Professor Matthews was good at explaining concepts to introduce students to Orgo 1 who didn't have any prior experience. She was pretty clear about expectations and explained the concepts clearly. Reading the syllabus I was scared because Professor Matthews makes her policies very clear. There were 3 tests + a final and the only other grades are hw. I'm being completely honest when I say she is the best professor I've had. She makes things easy to understand and goes completely by the textbook. If you did not have her for organic 1, do not take her for organic 2. Often made students feel as if they were stupid for not getting things right away. Lectures felt disorganized at times and she would heavily rely on the fact that you have read the textbook. Professor Matthews is a passionate professor. She knows her stuff, wants to help you learn it, and expects you to show up ready to do your part in that process. The lectures are clear and beneficial to learning. The textbook, Organic Chemistry 9th edition by Leroy G Wade and Jan William Simek, is FANTASTIC. do not take unless you want to tank your gpa. she enjoys humiliating students for no reason, very odd. messy notes. exams worth 90% of overall grade. multiple choice exams seem great until you realize you get no partial credit and every answer choice seems correct. no curve or corrections ever. I love Jude. She comes out of the gate a little scary because she has to set boundaries and rules. She teaches you what you need to know and gives you lots of practice. I spent 10-15 hours a week and think that's necessary to get an A. I though Jude was an amazing professor but go to class! I didn't go to class and it screwed me. She doesn't take excuses or BS so be ready to work. I don't get all the hype of Jude Matthews for Orgo at Northeastern; I think she did an alright job explaining concepts, but she forgot her computer cord about 4 different times in her office, which ate into lecture time for the first ~15 min each time. TAKE JUDE MATTHEWS FOR ORGO. She explains extraordinarily well, and is incredible, particularly if you're a visual learner. You could do well enough if you read the class textbook, but attending every lecture and review session will make your life infinitely easier. Her exams are as fair as orgo can get! Professor Matthews did a good job teaching the content. I had several experiences with her in office hours, where she was rude and dismissive towards me or other students. When people asked questions, she told them they must not have been paying attention in class.
