Methodology revolves around getting students to think outside the box and highly philosophical only for tests/exams to be true or false questions, which goes against this way of teaching. Professor Khrapko is incredibly knowledgeable and kind. He cares a lot about genomics, and tries hard to teach very difficult concepts. There is NO busy work in this class, so you just focus on making sure you understand content. Being involved during class by asking questions is the best way to succeed. Dr. Khrapko is fantastic but NOT everyone's cup of tea. Super passionate about the topic, really challenges you and makes you think, but his assessment style is unique (peer grading) and his slides are not helpful without having attended lecture. While Dr. Khrapko is very intelligent, his class is organized terribly. The peer grading system is broken and run by his TA, and the assignments are a pain. The lectures are long and difficult to sit through, and I won't know my grades until the day of or before the optional final. The professor is brilliant but is not a great teacher. Doesn't explain a lot of terms. This class requires a lot of attention. So if you struggle with a long attention span, this class is very difficult. Even those that do not see Prof. Khrapko as a good professor will agree that he is a wonderful person. I, however, also thought his approach to BIOL5591 was both innovative and useful. Professor Konstantin's style is unique and challenging, and so many students are uncomfortable in his class. But this is not a bad thing. Makes students grade each other's HW. Couldn't respond to emails. Changed the syllabus halfway in semester to reward the inherently smart kids. Couldn't follow his own syllabus. He is super smart but horrible at teaching. Talks in circles, contradicts himself, loses his train of thought, extremely disorganized. The grading is incredibly arbitrary and you have to go above and beyond in order to get an A. Study groups to collaborate on the homework are a must. Really nice man and clearly loves what he is teaching - however, the lectures are extremely long and disorganized and the peer-graded homework is normalized to a curve (but we're not provided with answers keys to use while grading). Absolute gem of a human being. Super passionate about what he teaches and wants everyone to succeed. That being said, he is brilliant - almost too brilliant to be teaching college kids and lectures can be decently unorganized.
