Professor Rivas is very kindhearted and jovial. However, he should not be teaching business courses. He has no experience working in any business-related role, ever, and this is obvious from day 1. Lectures/assignments were a joke (zero learning). If you want an A, participate a lot. Every grade (tests, presentations, papers) is determined by that.STRT4501 2025-09-15 04:14:23 +0000 UTC
Not sure how he would be in person but online was not a bad experience. He's very group project heavy and that guides the class more than he actually lectures. There's a decent amount of work, but it's not "hard". He cares about his students and is a fair grader and you can definitely get an A, as long as you can keep up. Very nice guy.MKTG4512 2020-08-21 23:15:59 +0000 UTC
Really nice guy! As someone intimidated by Strategy but needed to take it to graduate, I'm glad I took Rivas because it was pretty straight-forward and painless. The final project isn't fun as it's a group project, but there's no getting around group projects at NEU!STRT4501 2023-04-23 21:22:13 +0000 UTC
I had to take STRT in order to graduate, and Prof Rivas' class was a pretty painless way to get through it! I took the online class and everything was well laid-out. Rivas also encourages extra credit and extends deadlines to accomodate students' lives. Really nice guy overall!STRT4501 2023-04-18 06:18:01 +0000 UTC
All of our deadlines were due in the same week- it would have been better if it was spaced out. Rivas is very passionate- he stayed after class for an hour and helped me with my part of the project. You just have to show up and be ready to be cold-called in class, and you have to do quizzes.STRT4501 2022-08-26 16:18:33 +0000 UTC
People are being harsh, Rivas is extremely nice and caring and pretty flexible. Yes he is extremely disorganized but he won't punish you if you turn something in late cause you didn't know. Work is simple and everything else is straightforward. Those who can't keep up are those who can't read the syllabus, it's pretty clear. Super nice guy!STRT4501 2021-08-19 21:47:55 +0000 UTC
Virtually no feedback, a disorganized Canvas, long syllabus full of information but still lacks critical assignment criteria, constantly changing deadlines, long assignments, discussion posts graded harshly. By far and away the worst Northeastern experience I have ever had. Not a single positive thing to say about this course.STRT4501 2021-08-10 18:55:05 +0000 UTC
CONNECT quizzes, lots of case work, minimal live lecturing (instead we have to use old, recorded videos). Assignment resources can be in like 1 of 5 places every night. Prof. Rivas is kind-hearted but my positive remarks on the course stops there... There is always students confused about what is even due because his CANVAS is so disorganized.STRT4501 2021-07-28 20:58:48 +0000 UTC
I took him due to great ratings online. His extreme disorganization, unbelievably reading-heavy curriculum, and use of old recorded lectures from an MBA program at a different university all make for a confusing, jarring, and disjointed class experience. I would not recommend Mr. Rivas to anyone. I'm disappointed by this degree culminating course.STRT4501 2021-07-20 13:46:41 +0000 UTC
Prof. Rivas is easily the most kind hearted and caring professor I have had at NU. He encourages students to apply strategy concepts to their own lives, which made the course really interesting. There IS a lot of reading and participation is 30%, but the more you engage, the more you will learn- so it is well worth it if you can keep up!STRT4501 2020-08-12 11:43:56 +0000 UTC
Great professor. Highly recommend him. No textbook neededSTRT4501 2018-08-13 15:33:32 +0000 UTC
So thankful to take this class on my last semester. He truly cares about his students and loves to teach about the real world. His online exams are easy if you study the slides/textbook.STRT4501 2018-08-04 15:45:49 +0000 UTC
