Homework problems were harder than the quizzes or exams. Half the exam questions are the same as the practice he gives. If half the class stops showing up to class, he'll randomly give extra credit for showing up. Great professor who makes O-Chem manageable. I studied the day of most exams and still did well. He's kind, gives extra credit, tons of practice, and note cards on exams. Tests and quizzes EXACTLY match practice exams given. Do not take orgo with him. You will not learn anything unless you spend hours teaching yourself. Exams are impossible, with 4 25 MCQ exams determining your entire grade. Many many people dropped his class the semester I took it. Take anyone else. Average on one of our quizzes was a 54%. Everyone seemed like they were in survival mode. Everything after ch.5 is completely self taught, and everything significantly increases in difficulty. No one should be relying on a curve to save their grade/gpa. Cool guy, but save yourself. I can only say that taking his class is worse than self-study, becausestart from chapter 6 is all recored class, we watched his vedio recored and answered questions freely in class, Our average score on exam2 was 96 /150, as you can imagine. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE. The entire grade is based on quizzes and exams. The grading doesn't help the students score better as every MCQ is 6 points. I am currently in Orgo 2, and according to my current professor, he failed to teach us the most important chapter for Orgo 2, meaning I now have to spend extra time learning what I should already know (Chapter 11). One thing I really appreciated about Prof. Lopez is that he was always willing to take feedback. He changed things up (test dates, etc) based on student feedback. He started giving quizzes with partial credit when he got a TA so that the overall grade wasn't dependent on just four tests. Great man, kind, cares about his students, and always willing to help clear up misconceptions. HOWEVER, the TA for this class when I took it seemed to take joy in taking off points on quizzes, so just be very careful with everything you write. Prof. Lopez knows what he's talking about. We fell behind schedule about halfway through the semester, so the last few units felt rushed, but overall he taught the material pretty clearly. Professor Lopez is a nice person, but you would want to consider other professors first before taking his course. His lectures don't really make sense and his exams are nothing like what he covers in class. Your grade is based mainly on your four exam grades.
