Your grade is comprised of group projects, homework, and quizzes that are fair and cover the material discussed in class. Professor Barnay is incredibly caring and knowledgeable about health economics and policy! He is genuinely understanding with regards to workload, and will often accommodate in the best interest of students. Even though Healthcare Economics is not something I want to do in the future, I greatly enjoyed Prof Barnay's lectures and enthusiasm about the topic. He's very well educated about what he teaches. it is impossible to know what you will be tested on. The material is interesting but this professor's grading methods and lecture heavy teaching make it unenjoyable. You have to study absolutely everything for a short quiz that is 20% of your grade. I don't know why a professor would let 3 quizzes be 60% of a grade. Professor T.Barnay is amazing. Syllabus of every quiz is adjusted according to the material covered and a related interesting article. Grading is fair & he gives you feedbacks. Course is divided into weekly quizzes and monthly home works, no stress of a final exam taking the majority of the grade. I personally really enjoy Econ 1230 with Professor Barnay because it's one of those courses that will give back exactly what you put into it. Thomas Barnay is a very dedicated teacher, available outside class for questions. The lectures are very complete and a bit dense, but the readings do not take too much time. Barnay is a nice guy. I feel bad because people in my class barely participate but it's clear that he enjoys what he teaches. He jokes around sometimes which is cool. We have 12 quizzes worth 60% of the grade and the 2 lowest quiz grades are dropped. No midterm/final/exams which is definitely a plus.
